The Norwegians

Circumstances quickly spiral out of control in C. Denby Swanson’s The Norwegians. Two abandoned Minnesota women get more than they bargained for when they hire European hitmen to get rid of their ex-boyfriends. David Shough directs a local performance of the comedy which opens at 8pm on Saturday, February 5 at the Dayton Theater Guild, 430 Wayne Ave., Dayton. DPO String Quartet

It’s an afternoon of chamber music when the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance presents the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra String Quartet on Sunday, February 6th at the Dayton Art Institute, 456 Belmonte Park N., Dayton. The “Beethoven and Bruckner Quintets” matinee program is at 3 p.m. Aurelian Oprea (violin), Kirstin Greenlaw (violin), Sheridan Currie (viola) and Jonathan Lee (cello) will be accompanied by special guest Belinda Burge (viola) from the DPO. Derik Zoo

Last year marked the 10th anniversary of Derik Zoo’s first stand-up gig in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and he’s on the road to success. He was named comedian of the year in Branson, Missouri in 2019 and 2020. The Tennessee native also has acting appearances on television shows such as The Walking Dead and Nashville. Zoo is back on the road in early 2022 telling jokes, which takes him to Wiley’s Comedy Club, 101 Pine St., Dayton on Friday and Saturday, February 4th and 5th. Mark Gregory

Mark Gregory had a track scholarship to the University of Mississippi and was very active in his church as he developed the clean brand of comedy that remains his calling card to this day. In 2014 he recorded his first one-hour stand-up special at the Victoria Theater in Dayton. His latest special, Run With It, was released in late 2021 and is currently available on iTunes, Spectrum on Demand and other platforms. Gregory returns to town to perform at Funny Bone Comedy Club, 88 Plum St, Suite 200, The Green, Beavercreek on Fridays and Saturdays February 4th and 5th. Music in the Sorg Opera House

While the focus each night is on catchy pop tunes, this weekend the Sorg Opera House, 63 S. Main St., Middletown will bridge the gap between past and present. Cincinnati band The Wonderlands, who released their second album in Summer 2021, perform on Friday, February 4th. Abby Holliday will open the show. Cost: Advance tickets are $20 for reserved seating, $17 for students. A nationally touring tribute to the Fab Four, Beatlemania Magic brings their costumed multimedia show to Sorg on Saturday February 5th. Cost: $25 reserved seating, $30 premium seating. The light side

The Brightside, 905 E. Third St., Dayton is much more than just a music venue. The multipurpose facility features an intimate bar with a small stage and a larger space for concerts, weddings, markets, exhibitions and special events. The diverse program continues this week with “Caddyshack” as the main title for the Dayton Dinner Theater on Sunday 6 February at 18:00. The bi-monthly event features live jazz music, a Brock Masterson dinner and a film screening. The Brightside also teamed up with Sound Valley for the second Dayton Battle of the Bands. Art Hops at the Front Street Building, 1001 E. Second St., Dayton was canceled last month due to concerns from omicron. However, as the number of cases decreases, organizers plan to open the art studios and galleries to the public on Friday, February 4 from 5pm to 9pm. Attendees can roam the spaces to see original work and purchase pieces straight from the hometown artists. The Rolling Oasis Megabites Truck will be on hand for hungry art lovers. For free. DJ Sexbox will be DJing Jennifer Lopez, Destiny’s Child, Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child and more during Love U: A 90s RnB Night on Friday, February 4th at 9pm. Cost: $5 in advance, $7 on the day of the show. Cover begins at 8:00 p.m. DJs and MCs Mr. Dibbs and Cooley the Curator will provide music for Bezaro Art Supply’s one-year anniversary on Friday, Saturday, February 5 at 7:00 p.m. Bezaro is selling an exclusive, limited edition anniversary t-shirt.
