Delta Downs hosted the $ 75,000 Orleans Stakes on Friday afternoon and the winner was a hugely popular choice of fans as P. Dale Ladner’s 3-5 betting favorite Cilla took the lead under jockey Thomas Pompell. California Chrome’s daughter has returned to the winners’ circle for the first time since winning the Prioress Stakes Grade 2 at the Saratoga Race Course in September.

Cilla broke from the eighth post in a nine-man field, following the early pace set by Icy Charlie, who got break times of 22.54 seconds for the first quarter mile and 46.01 seconds for the half mile. When they turned home, Cilla Icy hired Charlie, who didn’t give in easily on the route. The pair battled for a few steps before Cilla got the upper hand and took a 2 3/4 victory over a game of Icy Charlie, while Onerollofthedice settled for third place, another half a length behind runner-up.

Cilla covered the five meter distance of the Orleans in 58.40 seconds. Every race on the Friday program was a competition on the fast track and under sunny skies.

Cilla’s victory marked the sixth of her 13 race career. She earned $ 45,000 on the deployment and now has a career bankroll of $ 416,000.

Bred in Louisiana by Ladner and her trainer Brett Brinkman, Cilla is a 4 year old brown California Chrome daughter out of Into Mischief mare Sittin At the Bar.

Fans who bet on Cilla received payouts of $ 3.20 to win, $ 2.40 for the seat, and $ 2.20 for the show. Icy Charlie was worth $ 4.80 to place and show $ 3.40. Onerollofthedice returned $ 7 to display.

Delta Downs concludes its racing week on Saturday afternoon with another nine-race program starting at 12:55 p.m. The headliner will be the $ 75,000 Sam’s Town Stakes for older horses sprinting five stadiums.
